Clobbered takes its title from “clobber ware” – the 18th and 19th century practice of over-painting Chinese porcelain, whether to conceal damage or to tailor objects to shifting tastes and markets. This act of adaptation, embellishment and reinvention provides a point of departure for the exhibition.
Bringing together works by Christopher Shannon, Holly Fox-Lee, Matthew Richardson, Jasper Thims and Gavin Fry, Clobbered explores the impulse to rework and reimagine, to mask flaws or create new surfaces of meaning. The title also plays on the slang of “clobber”: at once an act of striking with blunt force and a colloquial term for clothing and belongings, those personal effects that shape identity, meaning and memory.
